TAKE A TRIP THROUGH
We're delighted to announce that we've been placed 7th overall in the Sunday Times 100 Best Small Companies To Work For 2012.
As you can imagine, we're incredibly proud of this achievement and believe that this recognition highlights that Macildowie is a business built on great people, where the passion for customers and quality of the client and candidate experience starts from within. Sunday Times 100 Best Companies doesn't measure a National Average, it measures those companies who are brave enough to participate. And that means those brave enough to find out what their people say about them.
'People' are central to our Vision, Values and our Strategic Goals. We work very hard to make Macildowie a great place to work and to give our people the opportunity to be part of something very special.
If you are looking to build a career, you're in the right place to begin the journey.
I joined the business in 1997 as a raw graduate and Macildowie's first ever trainee. I'd like to say that I wanted a career in recruitment but truthfully I didn't even know it existed! Being a failed sportsman, the competitive nature and earning potential of the industry really appealed to me.
My first role was as a Candidate Resourcer (now known as Talent Pool).Nobody had ever done this job before, many have done it very successfully since.
By late 1999 I'd harassed the Chief Exec sufficiently for him to back me to open a Leicester Office from which we covered the Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire markets recruiting Finance and HR Professionals for the majority of the regions most prestigious businesses.
In 2007 Macildowie was acquired by Synetecs and I was appointed, alongside James Calder, to the Board.
In 2009, in the midst of the recession, we were voted the 19th Best Small Company to work for in the Sunday Times 100 and in addition we also started our third recruitment discipline – Procurement and Supply Chain.
There's no denying that the recession has been hard, but we've continued to grow, we've continued to listen to our staff and to our customers and as a result have pushed on and developed our service offering whilst others have retreated.
I believe that by producing outstanding recruitment solutions, by offering exceptional customer service and by offering an exciting career opportunity for people like you that our business will continue to grow from strength to strength.
We have recently beaten our 2009 Times 100 achievement having been voted the 7th Best Small Company to work for in the UK.
Macildowie is in the best shape it has ever been in. After nearly 15 years I still love the Company and everything it stands for and am very proud to work with every individual here.
When I graduated from university I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my career. I had a friend that worked for Macildowie and had said really positive things about his experiences with the company. As a result I sent through my application the day after my final university exam. I managed to secure an interview with James Taylor for a Talent Pool vacancy in the Leicester office and was really excited about everything he had to say.
From that point I haven't looked back and seven years down the line I am managing one of the companies' biggest divisions and playing a major role in the growth of the company. I have been to Las Vegas three times and New York once, all paid for by the company. I am also surrounded by the absolute top professionals in the market and as a result I feel as though I always have someone to turn to should I need help or advice.
I have overall responsibility for the Macildowie Talent Pool. Having graduated from the Talent Pool in 2005 I understand the demands and challenges that come with the role. I am hugely passionate about the fantastic opportunity that it brings and can strongly recommend the experience to anyone looking to establish themselves in recruitment. I owe a lot of my success and progression at Macildowie to the processes and standards that were instilled in me during my time in the Talent Pool.
For me there are two things that really stand out at Macildowie, the people and the rewards. I have made some of my best friends during my seven years with Macildowie to date.
Prior to Macildowie I worked within recruitment for 5 years specifically recruiting for the Procurement and Supply Chain sector but I had reached a glass ceiling and wanted to progress my career and development further so started to look further afield.
At the time Macildowie were looking for two Consultants to launch a new Procurement and Supply Chain division, alongside its already successful Finance and HR divisions. After reading that in 2007 Macildowie had been awarded 19th position in the Times SME Awards, I knew I had an opportunity to join a leading brand that would back me and a my colleague to make the Procurement and Supply Chain division a success, nothing has disappointed.
Since joining Macildowie I have had the most successful month recorded for a permanent consultant, pre-recession, the second most successful ever! I have also been the Top Biller for the Quarter on top of this, I am now set to have my most successful year of all time!
Macildowie provides enticing incentive schemes, I have been taken on weekends away to Las Vegas and New York. Two fantastic places that I have always wanted to see. Macildowie is a great business to work for, with a strong brand and excellent rewards, development opportunities and people. Its no wonder we were placed 7th in the Times SME Awards this time around.
When I graduated from university and started applying for jobs, three things were important to me. Similar to most people coming out of university I was keen to start earning as much money as possible as soon as possible. I wanted to be in a position where I was responsible for making the day to day decisions that could shape my career in the future. And I wanted to join a company where I would get both the initial and ongoing support to allow me to continue developing within a specific profession.
After countless interviews I wondered if I was asking for too much from my first job, but then met with Macildowie. It all seemed a bit too good to be true at first, but now one year in I can honestly say that all three of my requirements have been met, as well as some that I didn't even realise I had!
After progressing from the talent pool I started to recruit for Procurement and Supply Chain professionals up to £30,000, then after a further 3 months I progressed to recruit at the £30,000 upward market. There is a happy medium at Macildowie that gives me the autonomy to manage my own desk and to make the decisions that will affect my billings, but at the same time I am constantly surrounded by a wealth of knowledge from other Consultants, Managers and Directors and it is so easy to shout out for advice.
Thanks to the bonus structure I am able to save for a mortgage and use the extra incentives to treat myself. This year I will be returning to Tilinanu Orphanage in Malawi, courtesy of a Macildowie incentive scheme. www.lovetilinanu.org.uk I love working for Macildowie as I am surrounded by likeminded people and am challenged everyday to achieve my full potential.
Macildowie is a company that recognises the importance of training and development, the need to invest in skills, and the importance of a working environment where everyone feels that they are part of a team, have a voice and are rewarded for their efforts. Over half of all of our consultants joined the business in the Talent Pool without any prior experience of working in the recruitment industry.
Many businesses strive to achieve this, but when it comes to implementation, not everyone succeeds. Macildowie is an evident success story.
This year Investors In People (IIP) said of Macildowie "Your awareness of people's learning and development needs is first class", going on to elaborate "There is a first rate history of internal development of trainees (particularly graduates) into Consultants.
From the very beginning of your Macildowie journey, you will receive an induction pack called 'Outstanding Recruitment – The Macildowie Way', which includes a training timetable, 20-point training checklist and sets out in detail the values and vision of the company, demonstrating how these are achieved.
The companies 'Winning Behaviours' are as follows:
1) Honesty & Integrity: - We live the values. - We take personal responsibility. - We are honest and fair with each other and customers. - If things go wrong, we look at ourselves first.
2) Find a way/Innovate: - We push the boundaries. - We come up winning new ideas across the entire business (from systems to customers to people to sales growth). - We find a way to win, to fill our clients vacancies, to deliver solutions.
3) Open & Respectful: - We Share our knowledge to help improve one another. - We actively promote the work of other divisions. - We work as a team. - We treat others as we want to be treated ourselves. - We show mutual regard for everyone.
4) Wow Customers: (A long standing Macildowie Value) - We listen to customers. - We go the extra mile. - We consistently deliver day in day out.
5) Executional Excellence: - What sorts winners from the rest is execution. - Do what we say we will do.
These core principles also form a crucial part of the office branding, and are included on the walls as part of the interior scheme to ensure that everyone is driven to succeed in a common goal.
The majority of Macildowie's training is carried out in-house as the company has a strong belief that its people are its most important asset, ensuring that all staff are trained the "Macildowie Way" means that all staff have a passion for customers that is second to none. The focus on training and development is one that pays off for Macildowie, with exceptionally high levels of staff attraction and retention proving testament to this, especially given the high percentage of staff turnover usually associated with the recruitment industry.
Macildowie expects a lot of its people and it also likes to give something back in return. As a way of rewarding those who reach or exceed their targets, Macildowie has run an annual staff Las Vegas trip since 1999. Anyone who over performs is eligible to go, with the financial controller circulating an email each month to show how individuals are doing in relation to their 'Vegas target'. This year saw 13 consultants taking part in the trip to Las Vegas – a company record. Although the trip is designed to reward individuals, it also provides the perfect opportunity for team bonding whilst away.
Our sales support function is critical to the success of our consultants and therefore to the entire business. Macildowie's admin staff are essentially the guardian's of customer first impressions as it is they who answer the phone, open the door and show candidates and clients to interview and meeting rooms.
We have recently completed a business improvement project entitled "Sales Support" giving every member of sales support a voice to share their own ideas of how to make their own part of the business better, slicker, more efficient and consistent with Macildowie's brand.
